COTA
Children's
Organ Transplan Association
The Children's Organ Transplant
Association, Inc. (COTA) is a federally recognized National Charity.
COTA is dedicated to helping families and communities, with transplant
needy individuals, raise the necessary funds for the transplant and
transplant related expenses.
COTA was founded in 1986 when
a group of concerned, caring, Bloomington, Indiana citizens joined
hands to raise the funds required so two year old David McConnell
could be placed on a national liver transplant waiting list. This
group led by David Cain, raised $100,00 in two months. Unfortunately,
David McConnell died while waiting for his transplant. Through David
McConnell's life, David Cain received the vision, inspiration and
dedication to bring the Children's Organ Transplant Association into
existence.
Initially an all volunteer
organization, COTA has grown dramatically over the years. COTA now
has a full time staff, with specific responsibilities in areas like
individual's campaigns, volunteers, promotions and fund raising. Since
founding, COTA has worked with individuals all across the United States
and has raised nearly $4 million for transplants and transplant related
expenses. Each year the number of individuals we help increases. The
majority of operational grants and from the interest earned on monies
on deposit.
COTA's priority is to ensure
that no individual is excluded from a transplant, or transplant waiting
list because of lack of funds.
Little David McConnel died while
on a liver transplant waiting list . But his spirit, and the spirit
he evoked in others, lives on today in the children's Organ Transplant
Association.
